Key players

The crowd

By the time David Smith arrived on the steps to read the proclamation dissolving parliament, thousands of people had gathered, many protesting the events and supporting Gough Whitlam. Indeed, when Smith read out the proclamation, he was drowned out by people chanting, 'We want Gough'. Rallies were held for days afterwards outside Parliament House and around the country protesting the dismissal.
